Fueled by Passion: Immigrant Entrepreneurs’ Path to Prosperity

 By Diane Harrison

Embarking on an entrepreneurial journey in a new country offers both promise and unique challenges. This guide from Immigration Courtside aims to steer you through the complexities of starting a business as an immigrant. It ensures you are fully equipped to transform your vision into a thriving enterprise.

Deciphering the Local Market Landscape

Your first step is to become intimately familiar with the local market. This involves more than just a cursory glance at consumer behaviors. Dive deep to uncover the nuances of customer needs, preferences, and the gaps in the market. Analyzing competitors and identifying emerging trends will also provide valuable insights. This thorough understanding will guide the development of products or services that truly resonate with your target audience.

Creating Your Business Blueprint

With insights in hand, it’s time to draft your business blueprint. This comprehensive plan outlines your business goals, target market, product or service offerings, pricing strategy, and marketing approaches. It also includes detailed financial projections to validate the economic viability of your venture. This document is crucial for attracting investors and serves as a roadmap for your business’s growth.

Ensuring Financial Health

Financial mastery is critical for your business’s success. Start by establishing a robust budget and exploring funding options that align with your business phase and needs. Whether through personal savings, loans, or seeking investors, securing the right funding is the first step toward financial stability. Equally important is the rigorous tracking of all expenses to avoid the pitfalls of financial mismanagement.

Streamlining Your Paperwork

In the realm of business, organized documentation is your best ally. Keeping your business documents orderly, current, and readily accessible can significantly streamline operations. Converting documents to PDFs ensures consistent formatting across various devices and operating systems, facilitating easy sharing and storage. Moreover, when the need arises for you to combine PDF files, utilizing a PDF merging tool can simplify document management, keeping your focus on business growth.

Networking and Mentorship

Entrepreneurship is a journey best navigated with the support of mentors, advisors, and fellow entrepreneurs. These connections offer a wealth of knowledge, emotional support, and networking opportunities. Engaging with a community of like-minded individuals can provide guidance through the entrepreneurial landscape, especially for immigrants facing unique challenges.

Fostering Resilience and Positivity

The entrepreneurial path is inherently challenging, punctuated by setbacks and obstacles. For immigrants, these challenges can be magnified. Cultivating resilience, patience, and a positive mindset is essential for overcoming these hurdles. These traits enable you to view failures as learning opportunities, maintaining momentum toward your goals despite the obstacles.

Embracing Digital Innovation

In today’s digital age, an online presence is indispensable. A professional website and active social media engagement can dramatically extend your reach, connecting you with a wider audience. These digital platforms are essential for building your brand, engaging with customers, and establishing a competitive edge in the digital marketplace.

Selecting the Right Legal Structure

The choice of legal structure is a foundational decision for your business. An LLC (limited liability company) is often favored by small business owners due to its flexibility, tax benefits, and limited liability protection. Whether you choose to navigate this process independently or with professional assistance, understanding the implications of your choice is crucial for the legal and financial well-being of your business.

Embarking on an entrepreneurial journey as an immigrant is a bold step toward realizing your dreams. This guide lays out the essential steps to building a successful business, from understanding the local market to selecting the right legal structure to creating a document management system. With determination, resilience, and the right strategies, you can overcome the unique challenges faced by immigrant entrepreneurs and establish a thriving business that contributes to your new community.

NOTE: This PSA is not legal, financial, or tax advice. Business and tax regulations vary from state to state and within local jurisdictions. You should consult a business lawyer and a qualified financial advisor before starting a business.

By Diane Harrison

Courtside Exclusive

February 14, 2024

In life’s journey, the aspiration to leave a mark that resonates through generations is a common thread that binds humanity. Immigrants, in particular, face unique challenges and opportunities in crafting legacies.

The essence of your journey, enriched by diverse cultures and experiences, offers unparalleled potential to influence the world positively. Embracing this potential requires intentional actions and decisions that reflect your deepest values and aspirations. Below, immigrationcourtside.com shares more:

Manifesting Core Principles

You hold the power to mold your legacy through the daily embodiment of your core values. Let kindness, integrity, and generosity be the guiding principles of your actions. When lived out loud, these virtues serve as beacons that inspire those around you. Consistently demonstrating these qualities becomes the foundation upon which your legacy is built, ensuring that your influence endures through time.

Safeguarding Your Story

In today’s digital age, safeguarding your history and accomplishments is crucial. Take the time to digitize important documents to protect them from physical degradation and ensure they remain accessible for generations. Converting these files into PDFs helps maintain their integrity across various platforms and means you can share them quickly and securely.

Use a straightforward drag-and-drop tool to crop and resize pages (this deserves a look). Take this essential step to preserve the narratives and achievements that define your legacy.

Cultivating Meaningful Connections

The strength and depth of your relationships reflect the essence of your legacy. Foster meaningful connections with family, friends, and community members. These bonds are the fabric of your legacy, weaving together a network of support and love that mirrors your values. Through these relationships, you create a living legacy of warmth and support that resonates well beyond your immediate circle.

Passing on Wisdom and Expertise

Your knowledge and skills are invaluable gifts that can significantly impact others. Sharing your expertise not only helps others grow but also cements your legacy as someone who contributes to the advancement of others. Whether mentoring the younger generation or volunteering your time for those in need, these acts of generosity amplify your legacy, making a lasting difference in the world.

Leading with Ethical Integrity in Business

In business, nurturing a lasting legacy involves a steadfast commitment to ethical standards. Constructing an enterprise that mirrors your core values fosters a more equitable marketplace and sets a precedent for others to emulate.

Delve into the advantages of establishing an LLC, including limited liability, tax benefits, streamlined paperwork, and heightened flexibility. Guiding the formation process and evading exorbitant legal fees through self-filing or utilizing a formation service demonstrates a dedication to prudence and resourceful decision-making.

Advocating for What Matters

Your support for causes close to your heart extends the reach of your legacy far beyond your personal sphere. Whether through financial donations, advocacy, or hands-on involvement, your engagement in these causes leaves an indelible mark. This commitment to making a difference embodies the essence of a legacy that transcends time and geography, cementing your role as a catalyst for change.

Launching Enduring Ventures

Embark on endeavors that mirror your passions and beliefs, be it through a business venture, community project, or artistic expression. These initiatives are monuments to your dedication and vision, reflecting your unique contributions to the world. Such endeavors enrich your legacy and inspire others to pursue their passions with similar fervor and commitment.

Ensuring a Lasting Foundation

Ensuring your financial and legal affairs are in order is fundamental to legacy building. Proper management of wills, trusts, and other legal documents guarantees that your assets support your loved ones and the causes you cherish, even in your absence. This foresight and planning ensure that your legacy’s impact is felt long after you departed, offering future generations support and opportunities.

Your choices and values are pivotal in building a lasting legacy. As an immigrant, your diverse experiences present a unique opportunity to shape a legacy that transcends cultures and time. By embodying your values, preserving your heritage, and making meaningful contributions, you can leave a lasting impact that inspires others for generations to come.

Raising Hope: Community Efforts to Empower the Next Generation

By Diane Harrison

Courtside Exclusive

February 2, 2024

In the evolving social landscape of our times, vulnerable children face an array of challenges that impede their growth and development. However, communities possess an extraordinary capacity to alter these trajectories through concerted efforts. This article, courtesy of immigrationcourtside.com, sheds light on the vital role community initiatives play in bolstering these children’s prospects and outlines various ways communities can extend crucial support and opportunities to them.

Fostering Growth Through Mentorship

Communities can profoundly impact the lives of vulnerable children by harnessing the power of local volunteer mentorship programs. Often hailing from similar backgrounds, these mentors provide more than just academic support; they act as beacons of hope by offering guidance and exemplifying positive life choices. Such personal interactions foster a nurturing environment, crucial for these children’s emotional and social development.

Expanding Educational Horizons

Education is a vital catalyst for change, and communities are essential in enhancing accessibility. Initiatives such as after-school programs and scholarships, notably those for online education, play a crucial role in this endeavor. These efforts spur academic growth and offer the necessary flexibility for children to balance their educational pursuits with other life aspects. Importantly, embracing a variety of educational paths opens up numerous career possibilities.

For instance, with a degree in psychology, students can gain a deeper understanding of human behavior, which is instrumental in numerous professional and personal contexts. By championing diverse educational opportunities, communities are essentially unlocking new potential and avenues for their youth, ensuring a future rich with possibilities.

Cultivating Creative and Recreational Spaces

Community-run workshops and clubs offer a sanctuary for exploration and learning. In these safe and engaging spaces, children can delve into arts, sciences, or sports, fostering both educational and recreational growth. These programs do more than just occupy children’s time; they cultivate skills, confidence, and a sense of belonging, integral to their overall development.

Uniting Through Fundraising

Fundraising is a powerful tool for communities to provide tangible support to vulnerable children. Through collective efforts in organizing fundraisers, communities gather essential resources and strengthen their communal bonds. Such events underscore the shared responsibility of community members in nurturing the younger generation, reinforcing the network of support available to them.

Creating Robust Support Networks

The establishment of support networks within communities is invaluable. These networks offer a range of resources, from basic necessities like food and clothing to educational materials and counseling services. By pooling resources and expertise, communities ensure both children and their families have access to the comprehensive support they require.

Prioritizing Health and Wellness

A child’s well-being is multi-faceted, encompassing physical, mental, and emotional health. Community-organized health and wellness initiatives address these aspects, including free medical check-ups and mental health counseling. Such initiatives demonstrate a holistic approach to child care, recognizing the importance of nurturing every aspect of a child’s health.

Enhancing Opportunities Through Scholarships

Community-funded scholarship programs embody much more than mere financial assistance; they signify a profound dedication to nurturing the aspirations of young, promising individuals. These scholarships open doors to educational opportunities for children facing challenging circumstances, playing a pivotal role in revealing and nurturing their inherent potential.

This support not only sets them on a trajectory toward success but also instills a sense of confidence and ambition. Moreover, these scholarships often inspire recipients to give back to their communities in the future, creating a cycle of empowerment and progress. Through these initiatives, communities actively invest in a brighter, more capable generation.

Strengthening Safety and Security

Ensuring the safety of children is a fundamental responsibility. Through neighborhood watch programs, safety workshops, and collaborations with local law enforcement, communities play a critical role in creating a secure environment for children. These measures protect children and provide them with the confidence and peace of mind necessary to focus on their growth and development.

The collective power of a community is a formidable force in shaping the lives of vulnerable children. Communities can empower these children through strategic initiatives in mentorship, education, creative engagement, fundraising, support networks, health and wellness, scholarship opportunities, and safety measures. Through these efforts, communities can help vulnerable children overcome adversity and pave the way for a future filled with promise and potential.

Empowering Immigrant Entrepreneurs:
A Blueprint for Success

By Diane Harrison

Special to immigrationcourtside.com

Dec. 20, 2023

Immigrant entrepreneurs stand at the precipice of immense opportunity, yet they face unique challenges unknown to their native counterparts. Their journey in carving out a niche in foreign markets requires not only an unwavering entrepreneurial spirit but also a well-crafted strategy that navigates the intricacies of a new business landscape. From legal compliance to market understanding, their path is one of resilience and adaptability, leading to unparalleled growth and contribution in their new homeland. Learn more from this article presented by ImmigrationCourtside.com.

Seek Legal Guidance

The importance of legal compliance cannot be overstated. Immigrant entrepreneurs benefit greatly from consulting with experienced business attorneys who can navigate them through the complexities of local laws and regulations. This step is crucial in avoiding legal pitfalls and setting a firm foundation for business growth. Proper legal advice can also aid in understanding international trade laws, essential for businesses looking to operate globally.

Establish Financial Stability

Starting a business often involves balancing the initial stages of your venture with a steady source of income. Many entrepreneurs take on part-time or flexible jobs that allow them to devote necessary time to their business while ensuring financial stability. Look for employment that fits your skills and potentially supports your business venture.

Stand out as a candidate by creating an impactful resume and cover letter. Cover letters are the most difficult, so use online tools to make this process easier. You can try this page, which outlines helpful steps for creating a great cover letter. Other ways to make your cover letter shine include using appropriate references to the job, sticking with clear, precise language, and converting your document to a PDF.

Dive into Market Insights

Understanding the market is essential for any successful business, especially for immigrant entrepreneurs. Conducting detailed research to comprehend consumer needs and preferences is key, as it enables them to customize their products or services, ensuring they meet market demands effectively. This alignment significantly boosts their potential for success.

Gaining deep market insight also aids in anticipating future trends, providing a distinct competitive advantage. Moreover, this knowledge helps in identifying underserved niches or emerging opportunities, allowing for strategic positioning and expansion. Additionally, it fosters better risk management by preparing the business for market fluctuations and changes in consumer behavior.

Opt for an LLC

Selecting the appropriate business structure is crucial for immigrant entrepreneurs, with an LLC (Limited Liability Company) being a popular choice due to its considerable advantages. An LLC provides liability protection, shielding personal assets from business debts and lawsuits, and offers operational flexibility, adapting to the unique needs of the business.

This decision significantly influences the security and expansion possibilities of an immigrant entrepreneur’s venture. Furthermore, an LLC streamlines tax processes, thereby enhancing financial management efficiency and potentially reducing tax burdens.

Leverage Community Resources

Utilizing local resources is a strategic move for immigrant entrepreneurs, offering a plethora of support and expertise. By engaging with business development centers and networking in the community, they gain critical insights and connections, essential for understanding and thriving in the local business environment.

This involvement not only aids in navigating the local market but also accelerates business growth. Access to these resources also eases cultural acclimation, helping entrepreneurs to comprehend and assimilate into the local business culture.

Harness the Power of Digital Marketing

In the digital era, a well-crafted online marketing strategy is crucial. Tailoring digital marketing to connect with the target audience can significantly expand a business’s reach, attracting more customers and driving growth.

Effective digital marketing not only enhances visibility but also establishes a global presence, opening doors to international markets and opportunities. Additionally, it allows for precise targeting and analytics, enabling businesses to measure and optimize their marketing efforts for better results.

Cultivate Trust and Reputation

Building trust and a strong reputation in the market is essential. Immigrant entrepreneurs should focus on delivering exceptional quality, establishing a robust online presence, and seeking partnerships with established entities. This approach is vital for gaining customer loyalty and long-term business success. Cultivating a strong reputation also opens doors for future collaborations and opportunities.

Learn from Challenges

Adopting a positive perspective towards failures and setbacks is crucial. Viewing these experiences as learning opportunities allows immigrant entrepreneurs to refine their approach, increase resilience, and adapt to the evolving business landscape. Embracing these challenges also fosters innovation, driving entrepreneurs to find creative solutions and new business avenues.

In the world of entrepreneurship, immigrant entrepreneurs are the unsung heroes, turning their dreams into reality against all odds. Their journey, marked by determination and adaptability, is a testament to the power of resilience and strategic planning. As they weave their stories into the fabric of their new communities, they not only achieve personal success but also enrich the diverse tapestry of global business. Their successes are not just their own; they are beacons of hope and inspiration for future generations of entrepreneurs to come.

Moving to the US? Here’s How to Make the Best of It

Immigrating to a new country, let alone the US, is not just about knowing what to pack, hopping on a plane, and heading off. In fact, it requires a lot of planning ahead of time as well as a fair bit of research, so you’ll know what to expect when you get there. If you want to brush up on your knowledge before you go, here are a few interesting tidbits of information you might want to read up on before you board the plane US-bound, presented below by ImmigrationCourtside.com.

1. The US is BIG, Very Big

The US may look large on a map. But seeing it in real life is something else entirely. Not only are there an incredible 50 or so states, but within those states, you’ll find a blend of cultures, cuisines, dialects, and more that can also be vastly different from each other depending on where you go.

2. Learn the National Anthem

Sure, you might get around to this eventually, but the sooner you learn it, the better. Because the national anthem is a big part of being an American. And you’ll most likely have to recite this at most big sporting events. So, it’s better to get the knack for it sooner rather than later.

3. The Scenery is Amazing

If you’re planning on buying a home with a view in the States, then you’ll probably find one easily with the help of a realtor. Buying a home definitely has perks – including the ability to build equity and take advantage of tax credits – if you can afford it. But if it’s not the right time for you to buy, renting is also a great option!

Regardless of whether you rent or buy, you’ll need to choose a specific place to look. If you’re an outdoor enthusiast, look at cities near one of the hundreds of scenic national parks, so there’ll no doubt be lots to see and do – for free!

4. Right-Hand Driving

If you’re typically accustomed to driving on the left-hand side of the road, it may take some time to adjust to driving on the right-hand side of the road with the steering wheel on the left side of the vehicle. Or perhaps you’re just learning to drive; you can look for driving schools that specialize in helping immigrants get comfortable behind the wheel in the US.

5. Their Measuring System is Different

Yes, the metric system for measuring doesn’t exist in the States. And if you’re not that good at math, this can be a challenge if you have to decorate your new home, for example. There, you’ll have to get used to terms such as feet, pounds, and inches.

6. Taxes Work Differently

Suppose you fancy a shopping spree for your new home once you’ve settled in. In this case, don’t forget to budget for sales tax (which can vary from state to state) which is only added on once your purchases have been rung up.

If you plan to open a business here, you’ll need to learn about different types of taxes involved in entrepreneurship. It’s also important that you choose a business structure that works for you and your business idea. Most small businesses start as limited liability companies, or LLCs, because they protect the owner’s personal assets and provide tax benefits.

7. Food is a Big Deal

Not only is food a big deal in the States, but so are their portions. So, if you’re planning on eating out every once in a while as opposed to cooking in, just be sure to go hungry – very hungry.

8. Cars Win Over Trains

Surprisingly, trains are not the go-to mode of transport in the States. In fact, most people prefer a plane ride over a train ride, with the former actually being cheaper than the latter.

9. Their Table Etiquette is… Unusual

If eating with both a knife AND a fork is a big deal to you, you might want to consider relocating. In all seriousness, though, Americans do tend to eat with just a fork once they’ve cut up their food with both. Again, this may be a little unusual if you’re used to eating with both utensils. Nonetheless, this shouldn’t take too long to get the hang of!

10. Football Fanatics

If you thought cricket or rugby was big in your hometown, then you don’t know the magnitude of football in America. In fact, attending a football game is quite the occasion in the US. So be prepared to have a ball witnessing your favorite team score a touchdown.

How to Involve Your Family

Of course, you probably wouldn’t want your family to miss out on all the action you’re experiencing in your new home country. So, why not send them a care package or better yet purchase a plane ticket for them to come to visit you? For example, you can send money safely and conveniently abroad to families in Nigeria.

Enjoy Learning More During Your Journey

Immigrating to a new country can sure seem daunting at first. But if you know what to expect when you get there, it can feel like a weight of worry is lifted off your shoulders as you look ahead to your new journey with excitement ahead.

🇺🇸🗽A JULY 4 SMORGASBORD OF PATRIOTIC MUSINGS ON THE STATE OF OUR 245-YEAR-OLD DEMOCRACY!

🗽Emigrating to the U.S.? Here are Some Helpful Hints

By Diane Harrison

Moving to the United States is an exciting transition. Sometimes people who are new to the U.S. may not understand some of the culture and perspectives of its citizens. For immigrants preparing to make the big move, there are some things to keep in mind that will help ease the transition. Immigrationcourtside.com shares a few in the guide below.

The U.S. is a Melting Pot

The U.S. values independence and freedom to live with a variety of liberties. This translates into a unique melting-pot culture of diversity.

1. Americans originate from all over the world; 44.8 million immigrants lived in the U.S. as of 2018.

2. The U.S. values religious freedoms and human rights above all else. A lot of families are interfaith, meaning one spouse may be of the Jewish faith while their partner is Buddhist or Christian. There are interfaith communities that support the spiritual needs of many religions under one roof as a way to unite people.

Our Politics Vary

One of the most interesting aspects of U.S. politics is the diversity of our parties, and all voters coming together to elect constituents through a fair electoral process.

3. There are three political parties in the U.S.; Republicans, Democrats and Independents. Each of these parties value democracy but have differing beliefs about how it is best accomplished.

4. Our political system relies on the democractic process of voting for elected officials. Qualified immigrants can apply for voting ability.

Getting and Sending Support

The U.S. offers programs to assist immigrants in need of assistance in everyday life. If an immigrant does not need assistance but wishes to send funds to loved ones back home, there are reliable ways to facilitate that need.

5. There are companies that offer funds transfers at reasonable rates. If there were family in India for example, immigrants could relax knowing that their funds were being sent safely.

6. U.S. citizens are charitable and enjoy sharing their blessings with others. During holiday seasons such as Hanukkah and the Christian holiday of Christmas, Americans are particularly generous, providing gifts, food, and assistance to people in need, including immigrant populations from around the world.

Immigrants Have Rights and Benefits

Those who have immigrated to the U.S. have rights and systems in place to support their needs, and these have been developed as a way to reduce poverty among immigrant populations.

7. Immigrants who are working on assimilation in the U.S. may find that our resources and benefits are helpful. You are not on your own, so reach out for support.

8. For legal representation, immigrants can reach out and access free or reduced-cost attorneys.

9. Immigrants own and operate 1 in 5 U.S. businesses. You can do it, too.

10. Register your business as an LLC with the state to help protect yourself from liability.

11. People who have made the move to the U.S. may wish to become residents and can follow these logical steps toward citizenship.

Moving to the United States is exciting and thrilling, but it can also be scary and overwhelming. However, knowing what to expect can help alleviate some of that stress.

What does it mean to be American? Ask an immigrant

We are at an inflection point. After the departure of Trump, his xenophobia and racism continue to shape how we understand both immigration and what it means to be American. How do we challenge this worldview?

One way is to recognize that because xenophobia is an inextricable part of systemic racism in the U.S., it must be fought alongside racism. We need to examine and protest the unequal treatment of immigrants as part of this structure. We must counter the narratives that identify immigration as a threat with facts: COVID-19 is not the “Chinese virus.” Immigrants are essential workers, constituting 17% of the civilian labor force. About two-thirds of Americans say that immigrants strengthen the country.

The quote about unequal justice in the last item by Erika Lee underscores the dis-service that AG Garland is doing by failing to eradicate the “Dred Scottification” of migrants, primarily those of color, in our Immigration Courts.

His unwillingness to date to make the obvious personnel moves necessary to replace inadequate and weak judges and administrators with a diverse group of progressive experts who would bring due process, fundamental fairness, and racial and gender equality to our broken, biased, and dysfunctional Immigration Courts will continue to make American democracy fall well short of our stated ideals! The failure of the Biden Administration to “connect the dots” between racism and institutionalized xenophobia, particularly at EOIR, is highly disappointing, to say the least!

Still Connected: How Immigrants Can Support Family and Community Back Home

The decision to move to a new nation is complex and emotionally charged. People who do make the decision to emigrate often wish to maintain as much support and connection as possible to reduce the grief of being away from loved ones. Immigrants have many options for staying in touch and supporting their communities and families back home.

Many immigrants struggle with the transition to a new country. Blogs such as Immigration Courtside offer compelling opinion pieces on creating fair immigrant policy. This type of advocacy can influence political change to improve the lives of immigrants. Staying connected and supporting the community and family back home can make a significant difference in the quality of life for immigrants. People who wish to share resources with folks at home can benefit from tips on how to stay in touch and provide varying types of support.

Types of Support to Offer

Support can mean different things to different people. A common way immigrants support family and community back home is through financial assistance. Wages and access to money can vary widely, depending on the area of the world you live in. Often, people emigrate to the United States to have access to greater opportunities for work and income; the money sent home can bring loved ones out of poverty.

Immigrants in the US who wish to assist loved ones back home financially can do so with secure money transfers. If you have relatives in the Philippines, for example, you can send money safely, reliably, and quickly with little to no fees using a remittance service like Remitly. You’ll have greater peace of mind, knowing that the funds you send will arrive without interference from hackers or scammers.

Some immigrants may wish to ship supplies and gifts to loved ones back home as a means of support. Items like first aid kits, non-perishable food staples, and clothing can be shipped easily and safely, while other items are restricted or have limitations. Couriers like Parcel Monkey allow for low-cost shipping all over the world.

If you know of community projects back home that could benefit from support, consider starting a GoFundMe for the project on social media. The act of promoting this cause can also serve to educate American friends of your home country and foster a greater understanding of your heritage and culture. Financial gifts and other goods can be a terrific help to people back home, but just as important are emotional support and connection.

Offering Emotional Support

In addition to normal daily stressors that loved ones face back home, families and friends of people who have emigrated often experience grief and emotional pain related to the departure. We tend to relegate grief as a response to the death of a loved one, but grief can also manifest from the loss of family or friends in our daily lives. It is important for immigrants to maintain contact with loved ones back home to ease the burden and to have meaningful conversations.

Besides sharing big news and events, share the daily details that bring your loved ones a little closer to you. Talk about a favorite meal you’ve tried in the US or share popular songs of your area through YouTube. Use Teleparty to watch Netflix together. Check in with loved ones about their lives back home, including their daily routines and how they are feeling. Try to stay in touch as often as possible, using several means of contact.

Ways to Stay in Touch

Thanks to technological advances, there are many great ways to stay in touch with loved ones back home. Schedule weekly phone calls or video chats to stay caught up in the lives of loved ones, as well as texting and using social media to stay involved. Celebrate home holidays from a distance and introduce new friends to the folks back home through video gatherings. The greater the variety of contact, the better. There are many apps like Zoom or Facebook Messenger that make contact over the miles so much easier and more affordable than ever before.

Being apart does not have to be painful with the evolution of communication apps and features. Immigrants can show love and support for people back home by staying in touch, being involved, and sending financial assistance and packages.

Help for Migrants in the Time of COVID-19

By Diane Harrison*

There’s no question that everyone is struggling to navigate a world marred by a serious pandemic that’s brought about serious repercussions, especially economic and financial. However, it can be argued that immigrants are having it so much worse at this time as the government, in an effort to protect its own, has chosen to overlook their plight. As a result, countless migrant workers are now on unsure footing. So, let’s dig deeper to understand the problem and see what solutions may be at hand.

Anticipating the Challenges

It’s undeniable that migrant workers are among the hardest hit by COVID-19 — not in terms of infections, per se, but by the fallout. While the government is quick to come to the aid of its citizens affected by the pandemic, the same can’t be said for immigrants, leaving countless migrant workers to fend for themselves.

  • The fact that immigrants are essential to the economy is undeniable.
  • Many are even working on the frontlines of this pandemic, making them truly vital to the country’s COVID-19 response.
  • Unfortunately, they are all but neglected right now in the pandemic, lacking assistance in almost all avenues from healthcare to economic.

Getting the Help You Need

Despite the direness of the situation, there’s still hope on the horizon. Migrant workers will likely have their work cut out for them as they seek much-needed help in their adoptive countries. But the fact is, help and support are available out there.

  • Despite the general lack of healthcare for migrants, there are some healthcare resources that can prove to be useful.
  • Some states and local governments have also stepped up to provide resources for immigrants, running the gamut from legal to financial to healthcare.
  • There are also those devoted to protecting migrant farmworkers and, by extension, the country’s food supply.

Tapping the Right Services

Of course, it definitely pays to take matters into one’s own hands. In fact, it will serve migrant workers well to look into the many services that can be leveraged.

  • Knowing one’s rights as an immigrant is more important now than ever.
  • In fact, it can be wise to hire freelancers to help navigate through the red tape, so consider engaging an immigration lawyer or even just a translator.
  • Of course, find a nanny who can be trusted to care for your kids as you work on improving your situation.

Indeed, it’s a difficult time that’s been made even more so with the multitude of uncertainties that migrant workers face on a daily basis. But really, there’s no reason to make this situation more overwhelming than it already is. Again, help can be had, and regardless if it comes from you, the government or other kind-hearted souls no longer matter. It just needs to be accepted.
