Rebecca Klar reports for The Hill:
Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) said Monday that the order President Trump signed earlier in the day suspending, with some exceptions for health care and other “essential workers,” certain temporary work visas through the end of the year will have a “chilling effect” on the nation’s economic recovery amid the coronavirus pandemic.
“This decision, in my view, will have a chilling effect on our economic recovery at a time we should be doing all we can to restore the economy,” Graham said in a series of tweets.

Of course, if Graham, Mitch, and their GOP buddies in the Senate and House really wanted to rein in Trump they could. Just get together with Nancy Pelosi and Chuck Schumer and pass by veto-proof margins legislation countermanding or amending Trump’s order.
But, that would require action, not just babbling.
In the meantime, Trump has succeeded in totally destroying the U.S. legal immigration and refugee system that has taken decades to build. And, the institutions that could and should have stopped him failed.

We have millions of American citizens out of work. They absolutely deserve first dibs on the jobs your precious foreignors would have filled.
This is the right direction our nation is going.
Tell me how I could possibly be wrong, child?
The assumption that Trump has any concern for US workers or has a realistic strategy for dealing with COVID is preposterous. Trump’s incompetent handling of COVID-19 has much more to do with unemployment than does legal immigration. Immigrants, legal or otherwise, have been serving in essential jobs, propping up our economy in time of crisis. Trump has no plan whatsoever for getting Americans back to work under today’s conditions.
No meaningful connection between immigration and unemployment. No hard evidence that cutting legal immigration will magically bring back jobs. But, Trump never pays attention to facts or reality anyway.
You’re going to go pick tomatoes? Perhaps a little roofing?
Or, are you going to fill a job as an Executive for a multinational company? Perhaps a little child care or work in nursing homes? Or, are you a Japanese specialty chef or research scientist?
Jobs filled by immigrants and those Americans would line up for are mostly apples and oranges. To the extent adjustments need to be made, those “tweaks” in legal immigration could be done without suspending the whole system.
Trump’s incompetence and mishandling of legal immigration has actually “bankrupted” USCIS, previously one of the few “profitable” government agencies. That’s actually causing layoffs right now. And, his failure to come up, with even a minimally efficient way for states to get unemployment benefits out to Americans who need them has has harmed American workers.
Get real.
Worldwide immigration is at a standstill right now and consulates are dysfunctional, so Trump’s order was largely a nativist political stunt anyway.
We’ll need legal immigration to recover. Even lots of Republicans think so. I don’t agree with Graham on much. But, he’s absolutely correct on this one.

With millions of people still out of work due to the forced shutdowns, i would advise any president to stop issuing work visas. The amount of irreplacable foreign experts is likely near zero. I would love for The Hill to name a few positions that cannot possibly filled with/by Americans.
It’s all fake news garbage.
I just named quite a few in response to the previous post. Good luck picking those crabs and bringing in the harvest or doing research you aren’t qualified to do. And, how would you have any knowledge of who’s replaceable or not? Many companies can just move operations elsewhere if they can’t get the workers they need in the U.S. If Americans are in fact available and qualified for jobs, they will get them. Why would an employer want to go the considerable expense and trouble of petitioning for foreign workers, particularly in this Administration, if there were qualified American workers qualified and available to work? Moreover, since USCIS is bankrupt, thanks to Trump’s mismanagement, there’s nobody to process work petitions anyway
But, nobody’s going to be coming in under Trump. So, we’ll get to say how it plays out for U.S. workers. Not well, I suspect. Any time you are to the right of Graham and his buddies you need to rethink your position with some facts.
Judge Schmidt, these trolls don’t deserve a response really (although yours are both really good!). Both are clearly so uneducated and seem to be followers of the “real” Fake News….it boggles the mind. Maybe the Russians are trying to interfere with your informed and knowledgeable blog on these issues, who knows? As you said, let the trolls do the jobs that “Americans” haven’t done in the past 150 years – or ever really….The jobs that are really front line essential workers which keep ‘Merica afloat.
Let those trolls eat cake. Looking forward to seeing you again, post-covid19, hopefully sooner than later. Until then, You keep on, keepin on!
Warm regards,
Roxanne

Thanks, Rox!
You’re right. “Overengaging” with those who aren’t listening anyway has always been one of my bad habits. It’s actually been pointed out to me before, but a helpful reminder is always appreciated.
