Nolan writes:

“The difference between ‘DACA’ and ‘Dreamers’: A primer

The government shutdown ended Monday when Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) promised to take up an immigration bill that would protect an estimated 800,000 Dreamers from deportation under an open amendment process, if the Democrats would agree to end the shutdown. Senate Minority Leader Charles Schumer (D-N.Y) said that pledge was enough for his caucus to accept a three-week government funding bill, which passed on a vote of 81-18.

But what do the parties really intend to take up? A DACA-fix for the 690,000 current participants or a DREAM Act to provide a path to citizenship for 2.7 million undocumented aliens?

And who are the Dreamers?

. . . .

If the Senate passes the DREAM Act of 2017, it almost certainly will be dead on arrival in the House, which is what happened four years ago when Schumer, as part of the Gang of Eight, succeeded in getting an immigration bill passed in the Senate that was opposed by 70 percent of the Senate Republicans.

It would be more realistic to pass a bill that would just continue the DACA program for the current participants, but even that would fail if Trump will not sign it unless it includes a border wall, an end to chain migration, and an end to the Diversity Visa Program.”

In any case, the floor debates and their media coverage will be easier to understand if the senators are clear about who they are trying to help and how they want to help them.”

*******************************

Go on over to The Hill to read Nolan’s excellent explanations of “DACA” and “Dreamers.”

Along the lines mentioned by Nolan, I think an “indefinite DACA extension” for “The Wall” trade might still be a possibility. I actually don’t see Trump refusing to sign something along those lines. But, with Trump, nobody really knows. Might depend on the day.

As suggested by Nolan, a “full Dream Act” would likely be DOA in the House. And, I don’t see the Dems offering up the restrictions Trump wants on legal immigration in return for a narrow DACA extension.

I don’t think he would either, but recent events have convinced me that the Senate Dems don’t really want to help the aliens who came here illegally when they were children. I am thinking in particular about the Gang of Six. I think they are exploiting them for personal political gain.

That’s the only explanation I can think of for the proposal they made to Trump. He offers to consider a DACA fix deal in return for a wall and two other concessions and they offer a DREAM Act arrangement of some kind with only token gestures towards the wall and ending chain migration. And they include legalization for TPS recipients, which requires a super majority vote.

Paul says, “As suggested by Nolan, a “full Dream Act” would likely be DOA in the House. And, I don’t see the Dems offering up the restrictions Trump wants on legal immigration in return for a narrow DACA extension.”

They could get a DREAM Act if they made a serious effort to find a way to make it acceptable to the Republicans, not just Trump. The only way you can get legalization from the Republicans in this Post-IRCA world is to tie it to enforcement measures that would greatly reduce the possibility of a new group of undocumented aliens taking the place of the ones being legalized, which would not be impossible if the DREAM Act were to be limited to children. It’s easier to prevent children from coming illegally than it is to stop adults.

I think that would take giving Trump his wall and eliminating the asylum hearing and other special provisions for unaccompanied alien children. Even Obama tried to stop unaccompanied kids from coming here. Among other things, he had his DHS Secretary write an open letter explaining why it was a dangerous, very bad idea. But that wasn’t effective in view of the asylum hearing requirement.

Eliminating asylum hearings for UACs, many of whom are, in fact, entitled to some form of protection in the US is both a denial of Due Process and morally repugnant. Really, what is our country coming to?

I had the same feelings about the Obama Administration’s immoral and ineffective approach to refugees and their willingness to go along with stomping on the rights of minors. I just wasn’t free to express myself then.

Democrats can’t sell out Due Process for asylum seekers to get DACA relief! The Dreamers aren’t going anywhere. They will probably just have to go underground until the Dems eventually retake political power at some future point.

You are right about Schumer and “The Wall.” According to the Post, he withdrew that “offer” yesterday!

Another Trial Balloon through Nolan? As he admits no one knows what Trump will do next.

On consecutive 2 Weeks recently, Trump was watching Fox and Friends AM a/k/a “2 Bigots and a Blond” mostly because of Steve Ducey Trump’s platform and partner in crime during Trump’s own 2011-15 Birtherism trial balloon). Ducey helped Trump bank a 20% audience for Trump TV: Under-educated, senior early birds rural Whites. Hannity adds the latenighters.

Trump heard something stupid from Fox guests like ex-Judge Napolitano, and twice Trump twice started tweeting against his own Administration’s Bills, at that specific morning being voted on the floor of Congress.

That’s why all the White House Staff is trying to mug Steve Miller (not the Fly Like an Eagle guy). Miller, a/k/a Joseph Goebbels doppelganger, authored the first 2 unconstitutional Muslim Travel Bans and most recently got to Trump between his compromise with Schumer and Trump’s nap.
